在〈樹木に關する台灣人の迷信〉的記載中說到早期臺灣兒童入學時,會收集松樹樹脂,供奉於學堂的孔子神像前,認為可以增進兒童的聰明和記憶;從樹的「不移動」、「超越人類壽命」以及「材質」等特性,轉化對記憶力的渴望與投射,《如何臆測回憶的折射率》正如該作名稱所示,充滿了擬人的投射,想像一棵樹如何見證時空,同時也不做他想的,僅僅觀看一棵樹。回憶是對歷史想像的想像,離檔案遠了,但離自己的肉身卻更近。
對於歷史的想像,需要一些「檔案」為起點,文字、物件、聲音乃至於照片或影像,然而除上述「鑿鑿有據」的弱文物,諸如老樹、河川等,一些「鑿鑿」卻「無據」的痕跡與實體,如何與「有據」產生對話?上述提問引發了《如何臆測回憶的折射率》一作興趣的起點,對歷史的想像提出想像,也試圖思考「回憶」的功能、目的與過程。

The work “How to guess the refractive index of memories” try to make a proposition for “How to think about the essence of history” or “ How to think about the essence of memories”.
